M.UN.03.01: Know and use common units of measurement in length, weight and time.
In this lesson, students came to understand why it is necessary to have a standard unit of measurement.
First, a few students each measured a marked distance on the floor using their feet, walking heel-to-toe. Students soon realized that each student was going to get a different measurement due to different shoe sizes.
So, as a class, we came up with a standard unit called a “class shoe”. Sixteen students line up one foot along a line of tape. Then we took the tape and divided it into sixteen parts to get a standard class shoe size.
Next, we estimated measurements of objects in the class using our new standard unit of “class shoe”. Then, we measured different items using the class standard unit: “class shoe”.

Those of you that came to Open House signed up for times. For those of you that didn’t, I scheduled a time for you. I sent reminders on Friday with your child. If the time is not convenient for you, please return the slip with a time that is better for you and I will try to accommodate the time; however, there are no guarantees. I look forward to seeing you and discussing your child with you. Also, report cards will be passed out on this day.
Students need a lot of practice to master the basic addition and subtraction facts! They know how to add and subtract, but they need to do it quicker, especially since we were doing 2-digit and 3-digit addition, and we will be doing multiplication later on in the year. I will be giving students different types of practice such as drills, flashcard games, and homework. You can do your part by helping your child practice the addition facts. You can buy flashcards from the dollar store or make your own using index cards.
