Attention Student Council Members: All members who are signed up for the East/West Mega Meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 30, 2008 must see Mrs. Malone for the permission slip. The slip must be picked up by Monday, Oct.27 or you will lose your spot to attend this event.

Congratulation to the entire Dearborn High Debate team for their fine performance at the Wayne/ Oakland Debate League last Tuesday. One half of the DHS Team scored in the top 15 out of 96 debaters from Livonia Stevenson, Novi, South Lyon, and Plymouth-Canton High Schools. Placing second, was varsity captain, Hassan Bazzi, with a score of 2/44, one half point behind the first place speaker from Novi. Junior, Aseile Bazzi ranked seventh in the league with an impressive score of 7/40. Also placing as top speakers were novice debaters: Natali Malki, Liz Elder, and Nazmieh Khatib. The team will meet this Monday and Tuesday to prepare for their next meet. New members are always welcome. Go Debate!

Academic Achievement Awards are posted outside the Main Office. To earn this award you had to have a 3.5 or higher grade point average each semester last year. 9th and 10th graders also needed three academic subjects and 11th and 12th graders needed four academic subjects to qualify. Students - it is your responsibility to verify your name is spelled correctly and you are receiving the award you deserve. Any questions or inaccuracies should be reported to Mrs. Frison in the Main Office. Students will have until October 29th to verify this information.

Are you in a conflict with someone and want to peacefully work it out? DHS has a great peer mediation team ready to help you. All mediations are confidential and facilitated by trained peer mediators. All you need to do is fill out a peer mediation request form. Forms are located by the safe box across from the auditorium. You can also pick one up off the peer mediation bulletin board outside the main office.

With the cold weather right around the corner, we’ll all be wearing heavier coats to school. Please make sure your coat is all the way into the locker before you close the door to prevent locker jams.

Attention all boys: Any student wanting to tryout for the 2008-09 boys basketball program MUST have an athletic physical before they will be allowed to tryout. Please note, if you have participated in a 2008 fall sport, your physical form will be on file with the Athletic department and you will not need another physical for the remainder of the school year. To get a physical form please see Mr. Stergalas (boys athletic director). Physical forms are just outside his office.

COUNSELING NEWS:
Attention Juniors: Juniors taking the FREE ACT Test on Monday, Nov. 3, 2008 can sign up for a FREE Scores Back and Strategy Session Wednesday, Nov. 12th in the Media Center from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. Students must sign up in the Guidance Office by Friday, November 7, 2008 for this session. Please see Mrs. Dawson.
Attention Juniors: Princeton Review will be running a FREE, yes FREE Practice ACT at Dearborn High School on Monday, November 3rd from 2:30-6:30 p.m. This free ACT test is open to all juniors. Students must sign up for this event in the counseling office by Monday, October 27th. Please sign up early to reserve your spot for this practice test.
The ADC of Michigan announces the Tenth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship. An essay must be submitted on the following topic: As an Arab/Chaldean American, how would you describe the impact that the message/work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has and on your community and on you personally? You may qualify for a scholarship from 500 to 3000 dollars. Deadline for essay must be postmarked by Friday, January 15, 2009. Stop by the counseling office for more details.
Attention female seniors aspiring to become engineers. The Society of Women Engineers is offering a $5,000 scholarship to any college or university with an ABET accredited engineering program. Applications must be postmarked by February 27, 2009. Stop by the counseling office for an application.
