Do you like to play mind games? No real mind-building academic games? Then the Dearborn High Chess Team is looking for you. The Chess Team will begin meeting this Tuesday and Wednesday after school in B-4. So if you would like to expand your mind, meet in room B-4 Tuesday, November 25 at 2:20.

Key Club is Dearborn High’s longest running Service Club. All students are welcome to attend Monday meetings after school in the Media Center. September and October produced 516 hours of volunteer community service. Congratulations to the following Key Club Members as we honor them as Members of the Month for outstanding service in September & October: Sabrina Bazzy, Madina Elder, Samia Ftouni, Yasmine Ftouni, Jannelle Hamoud, Vayda Kasbah, Katherine MacFarlane, Devon Moore, Jillian Rivait, Sema Tayeh and Rebecca Weaver. Amazing volunteers, each and every one!!!

Attention Freshmen: There will be a mandatory class meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 2:20 in the Media Center. Students interested in running for class representatives must attend. Elections will be held at this meeting.

If you are parking in the student lot without a parking pass, the Dearborn Police will begin issuing tickets. You must purchase your pass in the student office for $20.00. No temporary passes will be issued.

It’s not too late to drop off new books for children and teens to be used at the Spectrum Human Services Libraries. These libraries are in need of fiction and non fiction books for the young people who stay at their community centers and/or juvenile home. This is a reminder that Dearborn High has a safe box located in F Hall. The purpose of this box is to allow students to feel free to issue their concerns that they have with other students. For example, if you are aware of someone trying to harm themselves or others, you can write out the issue and remain anonymous. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Alcodray or Ms. Rumler.

COUNSELING NEWS:

The ADC of Michigan announces the Tenth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship. An essay must be submitted on the following topic: As an Arab/Chaldean American, how would you describe the impact that the message/work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has and on your community and on you personally? You may qualify for a scholarship from 500 to 3000 dollars. Deadline for essay must be postmarked by Friday, January 15, 2009. Stop by the counseling office for more details.

Attention female seniors aspiring to become engineers. The Society of Women Engineers is offering a $5,000 scholarship to any college or university with an ABET accredited engineering program. Applications must be postmarked by February 27, 2009. Stop by the counseling office for an application.

Attention seniors: The Wayne County Detectives Association is presenting its annual Rudy Anaya Scholarship. Seniors interested in a career in law enforcement are only eligible. Since its inception, in the last seven years more than $12,500 .00 has been awarded to different recipients in the Wayne County area. The application must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2009. Stop by the counseling office for an application.

Dearborn High School theatre announces auditions for the 2009 Spring Musical production of Hello, Dolly! All students at DHS are welcome to audition for the production. All students auditioning MUST participate in one dance session and one vocal music session. No Exceptions. Complete audition information is posted on the Theatre Board in F-Hall. If you have any questions about the auditions, please see or contact Mr. Viscomi.

The audition schedule is as follows;

Dance Session 1 on Wednesday, Nov. 19 beginning at 5:30 pm in the Auditorium - Please come prepared and dressed to move

Dance Session 2 on Friday, Nov. 21 beginning at 2:30 pm in the Auditorium - Please come prepared and dressed to move

Vocal Music Session 1 on Thursday, Nov. 20 beginning at 2:30 pm til 5 pm in the Choir Room ( F-2) behind the auditorium

And Vocal Music Session 2 also on Thursday, Nov. 20, beginning at 6:15 pm also in the Choir Room.

Beginning Monday, November 17th we will provide an afterschool tutoring program for students who need assistance with their classes. We will meet from 2:20 – 3:00 in the cafeteria every Monday thru Thursday. No transportation will be provided. Any questions, see Ms. Alcodray.

Community Service opportunity: Any student who would be interested in tutoring for the afterschool program, feel free to join us after school. Attention seniors! The Arab American Women’s Business Council is offering a $1,000 scholarship. Perspective students must be of Arab descent, have at least a 3.0 GPA, must be a US citizen and reside in Michigan. Scholarship recipients will be required to volunteer 6 hours of community service to support any AAWBC annual activities. Stop by the counseling office to pick up an application. The deadline is November 21, 2008. Stop by the counseling office for an application.
