The United Way campaign began on Monday and will continue to run through next Friday, November 21, 2008.   If you have not had a chance to look over the materials yet, please take the time soon to read the pledge card carefully and consider making a contribution to the United Way.  If you choose to participate, place the completed pledge cards in my mailbox on or before 11-21.  I have extra pledge cards in my room if you have misplaced yours. Also, let me know if you would like a designation card…I’ll put one in your box when they come in.

Donate new children and teen books now for the Spectrum Human Services libraries. Spectrum works year round with children that cannot be in their home due to extenuating circumstances.  They also provide resources to families that can no longer pay for their mortgages and/or have been displaced due to a fire. Lastly, they also have a juvenile detention center for young people. Books have the ability to lift our spirits and help us deal with the challenges of life. Please consider dropping off new books to Ms. Rumler in the attendance office by Wed. the 26th of Nov.

Dearborn High School theatre announces auditions for the 2009 Spring Musical production of Hello, Dolly!  All students at DHS are welcome to audition for the production. All students auditioning MUST participate in one dance session and one vocal music session. No Exceptions. Complete audition information is posted on the Theatre Board in F-Hall. If you have any questions about the auditions, please see or contact Mr. Viscomi.

Attention Juniors: If you are interested in a free academic opportunity for the summer, Telluride Association Summer Program informational packet is available in the Counseling Office. Deadline is December 1, 2009. If you are interested, please leave your name with Mrs. Dawson by Friday, Nov. 21.

 


The Detroit Inter-Alumni Council and the United Negro College Fund is having a Collage Fair on Saturday, November 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn.   To register, call 313 873-1500 or email to renee.holmes@uncf.org.  Flyers are available in counseling office.

 

Attention seniors! The Arab American Women’s Business Council is offering a $1,000 scholarship. Perspective students  must be of Arab descent, have at least a 3.0 GPA, must be a US citizen and reside in Michigan. Scholarship recipients will be required to volunteer 6 hours of community service to support any AAWBC annual activities. Stop by the counseling office to pick up an application. The deadline is November 21, 2008. Stop by the counseling office for an application.

This is a reminder that Dearborn High has a safe box located in F Hall.  The purpose of this box is to allow students to feel free to issue their concerns that they have with other students.  For example, if you are aware of someone trying to harm themselves or others, you can write out the issue and remain anonymous. Attention seniors: The Wayne County Detectives Association is presenting its annual Rudy Anaya Scholarship. Seniors interested in a career in law enforcement are only eligible. Since its inception, in the last seven years more than $12,500 .00 has been awarded to different recipients in the Wayne County area. The application must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2009.  Stop by the counseling office for an application.

 

The ADC of Michigan announces the Tenth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship. An essay must be submitted on the following topic: As an Arab/Chaldean American, how would you describe the impact that the message/work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has and on your community and on you personally? You may qualify for a scholarship from 500 to 3000 dollars. Deadline for essay must be postmarked by Friday, January 15, 2009. Stop by the counseling office for more details.

 

Attention female seniors aspiring to become engineers. The Society of Women Engineers is offering a $5,000 scholarship to any college or university with an ABET accredited engineering program.  Applications must be postmarked by February 27, 2009.  Stop by the counseling office for an application.

The DHS Diversity Advisory Group and Peer Mediation Team are accepting holiday donations  of new  books  for children and teens for Spectrum Human Services.  Our goal is to stock and replenish the Spectrum libraries at the childcare, juvenile detention facility and community living centers.   Drop off new books to Ms. Rumler in the attendance office from Nov. 10th to Nov. 26th.  Spectrum assists neglected and/or abused young people as well as at risk families in need of shelter and resources.

Big thanks to all who turned out to support PEACE Club at The Little Cafe on Sat night to help families of Hurricane Ike. The student performances and special guest reader Mr. Ikens made the evening a great success. We raised $365.00!  Stay tuned for more exciting events coming from the un-club — PEACE CLUB!

Dearborn High Theatre presents its fall production of the comedy-fantasy Heaven Can Wait, opening this Thursday, Nov. 13th in the school auditorium at 7:30 pm. There are additional performances Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14th and 15th, also at 7:30 pm and Sunday, Nov. 16th at 3 pm. National Honor Society is starting their COTS campaign to gather new toiletry items to stock the temporary shelters for the homeless in Southeastern Michigan.  Please bring your donations to G-1 before or after school.  Each year the student body has been able to send hundreds of items. The need during our winter months becomes more critical each year.  Receipts are available.  Please find it in your heart to bring in even one item.  Thank you.

The Dearborn Varsity Volleyball Team defeated Woodhaven in the Regional semi-final this past Tuesday night to advance to the Regional Final to be played at Saline High School at 7:00 pm.  The team is hoping a HUGE crowd of Dearborn fans will come out to support our run at a state title.  We need to fill the stands with ORANGE AND BLACK!  Be a part of PIONEER PRIDE and support the team with your presence and your cheering!  Only 16 class A volleyball teams are still playing… and DEARBORN is one of them!

Dearborn High Theatre presents its fall production of the comedy-fantasy Heaven Can Wait, opening this Thursday, Nov. 13th in the school auditorium at 7:30 pm. There are additional performances Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14th and 15th, also at 7:30 pm and Sunday, Nov. 16th at 3 pm. Tickets are $7 for students and senior citizens, $8 for college students with ID and $10 general admission.  For more information, see Mr.Viscomi.

Dearborn Wrestling:  If you didn’t make it to the wrestling meeting last week and you are interested in joining the team you can show up at one of the conditioning practices November 10th-14th from 2:45 – 4:30 p.m. or at one of the regular practices, which starts November 17th from 3:00-5:30 p.m.  All practices start in the wrestling room.

This is a reminder that Dearborn High has a safe box located in F Hall.  The purpose of this box is to allow students to feel free to issue their concerns that they have with other students.  For example, if you are aware of someone trying to harm themselves or others, you can write out the issue and remain anonymous.
