3/29 & 3/30 VIETNAM!

Today in class the students learned a little bit a history about a difficult time for our nation.  The Vietnam War.

We started off the day by checking worksheet 27-3 from last class.  Thanks to our students who led the class in correcting the pages.

The class read and discussed section 27-4 (regarding Vietnam) as a whole.  Following discussion, the class worked on the corresponding worksheet, due on Monday.

To further reinforce of Vietnam lesson, the classed watched a video describing life among the various ethnic groups in Vietnam.

To wrap up chapter 27, the class worked on the chapter 27 review worksheet.  This is a comprehensive two-sided page asking for information from all of chapter 27.  This is also due Monday.

Our last day for conferences is Thursday, March 29 from 3:15 until 6:00.  Hope to see you there!

3/27 & 3/28 QAR and Section 27-3

Parents:  Conferences begin tonight!  5-8. Thursday from 3-6.
Today in class we read section 27-3 together.  The section consisted of current information about North and South Korea.  After our discussion, the class worked on a QAR (Question Answer Relationship) assignment.  They independently read an article also about the current status in the Koreas.  They used that information to answer five questions about the Koreas.

Once the QAR assignment was finished the kids had to follow-up with the 27-3 worksheet.  This sheet is due the next time we meet.

NOTE TO STUDENTS: Make sure that you are staying on track!  This is a new semester.  You have a fresh start.  Do your best at all times. I know you will all improve!

3/15 & 3/16 Classwork & Singing?

Today was probably one of my most favorite classes yet.  Our discussion related to chapter 26 section 4.  The topic of discussion was about the religions of Southwest Asia.  The class read about Islam, Christianity, and Judaiasm.  We discussed the section and then shared information about religions with each other.  It was wonderful seeing a variety of students educating one another about their respective religions.  What an incredible cooperative learning experience!

Students worked together to complete worksheet 26-3 and 26-4 (due Monday).

We watched a few short video clips about cultures in Southwest Asia and discussed them afterwords.

Singing in Social Studies!  Huh?  I must admit, I’m not good at it, but I love to sing!  I remember a cartoon from my youth called “Animaniacs.”  At the end of the  show they would sing the “Nations of the World” song.  I was able to find the song!  I decided it would be fun to do in class.  The goal is that my students will be able to name the stong majority if the nations in the world.  This is something we will practice for a few minutes a few times a week.  By the end of the year they’ll have it engraned in their minds!  If your curious about the lyrics, you can find them at the following address:  http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs.cmu.edu/user/clamen/misc/tv/Animaniacs/Nations.html

Disclaimer: The song is not 100% accurate.  Our world is in constant flux, thus there are countries that have disbanded and formed.  Such as Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia; two nations instead of one).  However to keep the integrity of the rhyme, we will not make changes to the song, only discuss the changes that have occurred.

3/13 & 3/14 QAR and OUTLINING

The process of educating is challenging.  To help make learning easy and fun, strategies are developed by dedicated professionals.  Today we tied two strategies into our daily lessons.

We began by reading section 26-2 on page 487 in our text book.  We set up an outline using information from the section.  Many of the kids had never used an outline before!  The students made the suggestions to place in the outline on the overhead projector. Outlining is a viable method for taking notes and organizing information.  Parents: ask your kids to see their outline.  They did well!

The next strategy we used is known as QAR: Question Answer Relationship.  We used this strategy with section 26-3 on page 490 in our text.  In this strategy the students determine if a question that is asked of them is a “right there” question (an answer that is found in one sentence in the text), a “think and search” question (an answer that is found throughout many sentences or paragraphs), an “author and me” question (an answer you find by using what the author gave you but also using your own thoughts), and finally an “on your own” question (an answer found strictly using what is in your head, no text necessary).  I gave the class a two-sided worksheet with 10 questions (of all four types listed above).  They worked with a partner of their choosing to determine the type of question and find the answers.

It can be difficult learning new strategies, but the students did a great job!

3/11 TESTS SCORES REVEALED!

Welcome back from the shortest weekend yet.  Literally, we lost an hour!

Students were introduced to the cultures of China, Japan, and the Koreas in section 26-1.  They answered questions1-3 on page 486 independently.

Students then received their test scores.  They didn’t get to take the tests with them because I had a few students who didn’t take the test.  They’ll get them to take with them soon enough.

Enjoy the rest of your Monday!  Try to catch up on that lost hour of sleep!

3/8 & 3/9 TEST TODAY!

Chapter 24 & 25 test today!

Before the test the kids were given time to study.  We also checked over a few assignments (25-4 worksheet and chapter 25 review p.480).

The kids took the test and had the opportunity to make up missing work because the marking period ENDS ON MARCH 16th.

Make sure you keep your grades up!  This year is flying by! The school year will be over before you know it.
