Today in class we went over last nights homework. I heard a lot of great answers. Well done!
We then read section 19-3 about Africa’s natural resources. Make sure to reread the sections so you can succeed on your quiz!

We began class today by continuing work on the two maps of Africa (physical and political). After about 20 minutes, we check the homework assignment from two nights ago. Thank you to our guest teachers who did a great job going over the assignment with the class! After that the students began working independently on a T-H-E-I-V-E-S worksheet, stealing great information from their textbook (section 19-1). If you finished in class, nice work. If not, make sure you finish it for homework, due tomorrow. Maps are due tomorrow as well!

It feel that it is incredibly important to know the many countries you will be studying in a continent. With that said, today’s assignment is to work on, not one, but two maps of Africa. Each student received a political and physical map of Africa. In addition, they also received a list of country names and physical features to add to the maps. Each of the five regions of Africa will be a different color, to distinguish one from another. Students will have a bit more time tomorrow to work on their maps!

THE CHAPTER 17/18 TEST WAS GIVEN BACK TODAY. ASK YOUR STUDENT TO SEE THEIR SCORE!
Well I hope you all enjoyed your THANKSGIVING BREAK! I know I did. Sorry for the lack of blogging, but I was at a 3 day conference last week.
Today we start a new unit. AFRICA!

The kids shared all the interesting facts they know about Africa with each other. They then watch a 15 minute movie about Africa and its vast physical features and climate zones. After that they worked on a two-sided worksheet about Africa. One side contained questions about physical features, and the other side had them look at a map and answer ten questions about the map. That sheet is due tomorrow if you didn’t already finish!
If you read this, make sure you bring colored pencils to Social Studies tomorrow!
TEST ALERT! THE CHAPTER 17 AND 18 TEST IS ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH. MAKE SURE YOU ARE STUDYING EVERY NIGHT AND PRACTICING YOUR ESSAY QUESTIONS!

Today in class we continued our lesson about Russia: From Communist to Democracy. We began by reviewing information we learned the previous day. We worked in groups to discuss informational facts about communism and democracy. We shared the information with the rest of the class.
We ended with a “Type III Writing.” A Type III is a writing method to show understanding of a subject. We will be using these more frequently. Ask your child to tell you all about them.
Your homework for the night is to study and practice your essay questions!
TEST ALERT: WE WILL HAVE A TEST ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH. STUDY YOUR STUDY GUIDE AND PRACTICE/STUDY YOUR ESSAY QUESTIONS!
Today in class we began by watching a four minute video about the changes that have occurred in Russia since the change from communism to democracy.
We then made a K-W-L (Know-Want to Know-Learned) chart about Russia. We filled in the first two sections together as a group. Then we read the section together. As we read, we filled in the “Learned” section of the chart. DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR K-W-L CHART TOMORROW!
TEST ALERT: THE CHAPTER 17/18 TEST WILL TAKE PLACE ONE WEEK FROM TODAY ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH. STUDY EVERY DAY!!!!!
Today the students received the chapter 17/18 test study guide. They had the majority of the class period to search for answers in their texts. At the end of the class, we went over the answers to ensure that the kids are studying correct information!
The two test essay questions are found at the end of the study guide. Make sure to practice these. Make sure to do your research, organize your information, and make it at least 5 sentences long. If you’re not sure it’s perfect, ask your folks! Essay questions are worth 10 points each, so they weigh heavily on your test grade! PRACTICE!
Thank you for the many parents who came to conferences. It’s a pleasure to meet you all. If you have any questions, you know where to find me!
Today in class the students used the 2 “foldable” graphic organizers they made in class the last two days to answer 10 questions that I posed to them. Those who filled out their organizers properly did very well.
The class then independently read section 18-3 Czech Republic. We watched an informational video entitled “We are from the Czech Republic.” The video, though silly at times, shared much information about what it’s like to live in the Czech Republic.
There is no homework this weekend. GO BLUE! GO LIONS! GO PISTONS! GO RED WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
****Tonight marks the second and final night of conferences. They run from 5:00-8:15 this evening. I can’t wait to see you all there!
Today in class we discussed the Balkan Peninsula and the countries that make it up. We read section 18-2 as a class. The students were to then make an 8-flap graphic organizer based on the table on page 331 in their textbook. The organizer will house information such as major ethnic groups, major religions, and languages spoken. The organizer will act as a “quick look” reference about the Balkan region.
HOMEWORK: If they didn’t finish their organizer in class, it is to be finished for homework.
I can’t wait to see you parents tonight!
Today in class the students began by reading the section on Poland (p. 327-329) independently. We followed that up by making a “Foldable,” a 3 dimensional graphic organizer (ask your kids to see them!). One half of the organizer was dedicated to Poland during communism, while the other half was dedicated to a democratic Poland.
We then read through the section as a whole group and filled in our organizers when we came across vital information. The kids were great at picking out important info for our organizer.
For homework tonight student must finish (they started it in class) the 18-1 worksheet, due tomorrow. They should try to answer the questions using their “Foldable.”
Parents: Tonight is the first night of Parent-Teacher Conferences. Today they run from 3:15 to 6:30. Tomorrow they run from 5:00-8:15. Can’t wait to meet all of you!
