Today I checked to see how far the students were along on their scrapbook projects. They showed me what they have and what they are planning on working on soon. While I was checking all of this in, they had the class time to work on their scrapbooks. We’re trying to keep this project as without stress as possible!
**NEXT CHECKPOINT: Friday, March 7, 2008–2 more parts of the scrapbook are due. Use this weekend to get some work done!
**2 FINISHED SECTIONS OF THE SCRAPBOOK/2 source cards WILL BE CHECKED IN ON FRIDAY 2/29**
Today the students began class by reviewing their outcome sentences from the day before with each other. Following that, they listened as I read a section from the book Bearing Witness, called “Going into hiding.” The reading was vignette describing how Jewish children were placed with non-Jewish families in order to have a better chance at survival.
The lesson continued with about 14 minutes of footage of Holocaust survivor testimony about when Hitler came to power, transportation to the camps, and life in the camps.
The lesson culminated with a TYPE III writing that asked: How did the Holocaust impact the lives of Jews, “the Unwanted,” and Gentiles that lived during that time period?
I’m excited to read the responses!
**2 FINISHED SECTIONS OF THE SCRAPBOOK WILL BE CHECKED IN ON FRIDAY 2/29–BRING IN ALL OF YOUR SCRAP BOOKING SUPPLIES…YOU WILL HAVE TIME TO WORK WHILE I’M CHECKING IN PAGES!!!!!**
**2 FINISHED SECTIONS OF THE SCRAPBOOK WILL BE CHECKED IN ON FRIDAY 2/29**
Today is class was a very heart-wrenching lesson about the Holocaust. The class began by writing down what they know about the Holocaust. Then they viewed a PowerPoint presentation filled with information, pictures, and photographs from the Holocaust time period. Finally they finished three sentences at the end of class. They were as follows:
1) What I knew about the Holocaust before today was…
2) What I learned about the Holocaust is…
3) When I learne about the Holocaust I feel…

Today in class we had a period devoted to starting two sections (of each students’ choosing) of the scrapbook project. Make sure you continue to work on this all week. Two COMPLETED sections of the scrapbook need to be checked in on Friday, on our first of a few “SCRAPBOOK CHECKPOINT” days.
I saw a lot of students working hard on cover pages, birth certificates, birth announcements, source cards, and many more sections! USE CLASS WORK TIME WISELY!
**Remember: TWO SECTIONS FINISHED…DUE FRIDAY!!!!!

Today we spent our class period in the media center. We used the time to find information for our Scrapbook Project. Students were able to find information in books, magazines, and on websites. Time will be provided on a weekly basis to ensure student success.
HOMEWORK, DUE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29TH: (Scrapbook Checkpoint) Each student should have completed TWO (2) parts of their scrapbook project and two (2) completed source cards to be checked in during class. Breaking down the BIG project into SMALL sections will help to make it easier to manage.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE WORKING ON YOUR SCRAPBOOK ON A DAILY/NIGHTLY BASIS!
Today in class the students got to choose their Scrapbook Project person. Now, I know not everyone is thrilled with who they picked, but not everyone can do Martin Luther King Jr!
HOMEWORK FOR THE WEEKEND: To get the ball rolling on this project, this weekend you must find two pieces of information (i.e. magazine article, Internet source, encyclopedia, etc.) and bring them to school ON MONDAY with the information needed to create a source card for each of the two sources. If you find more than two sources…YOU’RE AWESOME!
HAVE AN AMAZING WEEKEND! BE SAFE! HAVE FUN! And most importantly…DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
LANGUAGE ARTS/SOCIAL STUDIES PROJECT

Today all students were given the Scrapbook project! Here is the assignment: You will develop a biographical scrapbook on a person who you believe has made the world a better place. The person can be from any place in the world, and needs to have been born after 1800. Your goal is to create the scrapbook as if you are the person.
Students have the assignment sheet and scoring rubric. This project will be due on March 27th. The students have responded to the project with great excitement! They’re excited let their creativity run wild!!!!!
WE WILL BE PICKING OUT SCRAPBOOK TOPICS TOMORROW!
CLASS TODAY
Today in class the students were broken up into 4 groups. Two groups were assigned section 24-2 while the other two groups were assigned section 24-3. The groups were to read their respective sections, pull out the MOST important information, and finally come up with a clever way to share that information with the rest of the class. The teams were in competition with each other. By class vote, whichever of the two teams performed the best would win JOLLY RANCHERS! I saw some very creative performances today!
I hope to do this again the the near future. Keep up the good work!

Today in class the students began their day by working on a T-H-I-E-V-E-S worksheet, aptly titled because they “steal” information from the text in order to complete it. It’s a reading comprehension strategy that supports the idea that people remember more of what they read when they read with a purpose. Trust me…it works! If they did not finish the sheet in class it needs to be done for homework, due tomorrow!
We then moved on to read the section (24-1) as a whole group. Discussing physical features of Asia such as Mt. Everest (pictured above). Fun topic. We’ll discuss more soon!

Today we had shortened 1/2 hour classes. We read a five minute introduction to the book Bearing Witness: Stories of the Holocaust. Though we have already studied Europe, these short stories will be a nice tie-in to the Language Arts study of The Diary of Anne Frank.
We also introduced the continent of Asia to the class. We discussed what we think of when we hear the word Asia. Most students said, China, Japan, Egg Rolls, and so on. I’m hoping to expand on the quite a bit
The students had an opportunity to gaze at our over-sized globes to familiarize themselves with the countries, physical features, and bodies of water that comprise Asia. This is going to be a fun unit!
REMEMBER TO STUDY TONIGHT FOR THE CHAPTER 23 QUIZ TOMORROW!
Today is the day we wrapped up our HUGE unit on Africa. It was a stroll down memory lane. Each student was responsible for choosing a person/event/country that they feel was/is important to Africa’s history. Once they decided on a person/event/country that was important, they had to list at least 3 supporting details as to why it’s so important.
We finished up the day by turning all the above information in to a type III writing assignment. I will check them over the break. Stay tuned to Parent Connect for future grades.
Bye bye Africa…we’ll miss you!
