Kindergarten “Katch-Up” February 10, 2012
Welcome Willem back to school! We missed YOU! I have assessed the students on reading. We will begin to work with the kids on reading “little books”. Please watch for a bag to come home Monday & then every day. It won’t have a new book everyday but practice reading it/them everyday at home. We are working on learning strategies for reading with the easier books & then once we can do that we will move into harder books. Kindergarten students should be reading at a level 3 or higher by the end of the school year so it is very important to work with your child daily.
We have started spelling tests. You should have received a 3×5 card this week with a spelling word for your child to practice. They need to be able to read, spell & write the word. Once they can do that send the card back in & I will test them on it & give them a new word.
Please make sure that your child has a towel to lay on for rest time. Our floors are not so clean by the afternoon & I hate to see kids laying on it.
Please make sure that your child has extra clothes here at school as we go out to play many are getting wet & need to change.
A BIG THANK YOU to Mrs. Pung for taking all of our Book Bingo Basket items & putting them together for us to raffle off.
GO GREEN shirts are for sale to wear on Wednesdays to show your support. They are $10 OR you can send in 70 recyclable cans. Please include your child’s name, grade & teacher name along with what size shirt you would like.
WHITMORE WEAR is also for sale to wear on Fridays, kind of like Spirit Day. You can pick up a form in the office for those.
I don’t think that everyone is receiving our blog/newsletters as I have not heard back from everyone. IF you are receiving the blog posts via email please make sure that you reply/respond to me so I can check you off my list.
Daily 5:
We are doing 3 rounds of Daily 5 everyday. We are working on reading & writing. Please send in new books for your child to trade out in their book boxes. We are working on comprehension which means we understand what we read. We are practicing by retelling the beginning, middle & end of stories we hear.
Science: We are talking about shadows & how we need a source of light to create them. We will also begin to discuss gravity & how objects fall down, toward Earth.
Math: Please continue to work on writing numbers to 30, counting to 100 by ones, adding, subtracting & time to the hour.
Social Studies: We are working on places in our immediate environment & neighborhoods. Houses, parks, stores, police/fire dept, doctors, dentists, hospitals etc…..
