Have you seen the new Harry Potter movie? What did you think? As usual, I like the book better. What really fascinated me was the variety of reactions to this movie.  You can see the trailer here . The official website has all the expected bells and whistles and special effects. The Frisky assumed we all loved it and had been waiting with baited breathe for months to watch it. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 84%, but Stuart Thorniley at Cultural Wasteland didn’t like it much. Can all these people be watching the same movie? Why are reviews often so different? I haven’t gotten many book reviews from students this year, so I decided to share one that I just wrote on the Good Reads site. Good Reads is a social media site where people of all ages talk about things they read or are reading. It has a book gruop for every interest and a large collection of book reviews. If you want to see my review of My Father’s Daughter by Hannah Pool here it is.My Father's Daughter My Father’s Daughter by Hannah Pool

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars
What a touching story of losing and finding, of belonging and exclusion, of knowing and not knowing. If you have ever felt you don’t belong, or have ever ventured into another culture or another country and claimed some part of it as your own, this book is for you!

The Stephanie Meyer series, Twilight, has ignited a wild fire here at McU.

It is great to see students reading something a bit challenging. Who said reading was boring?

There is a book to interest each and every human being. Find yours!

I was glad to see that Suzanne liked The Pigman. I first read it when I was in ninth grade. It was a new book when I read it, because it was very long ago. I remember thinking that it was the first truly realistic book I had ever read in school. I hope you are finding new books that strike you personally. Please recommend any you read to me so I can purchase them.

I am once again looking for suggestions for good books to buy. I will be placing another order in the spring, so please give me your suggestions. My new favorite book is The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. The illustrations are fabulous and very necessary for understanding the story. It is this year’s Caldecott Medal winner, even though it is about 400 pages long.

I have some (although not a huge amount) of money to spend on new books for middle school pleasure reading. I would like to know what you would suggest. Please tell me the title (required), the author and give a short summary. I will purchase those books which have the highest quality representation. That means I will buy the books that people do the best job of describing in a short summary. You also need to convince me that the book is worthwhile for a school library. I look forward to your submissions.
