The Place for Middle School Book Talk

Welcome to the Middle School Book Review Blog

March 5th, 2007 by alvarac

This space is for reviews of books you think other middle school kids would enjoy. Please do not post with your real email. Just make up something with an @ sign in the middle and a .com on the end. Remember that a book review should tell why someone would like a book, but not give away the entire plot. Also realize that every post is reviewed by Mrs. Alvarado before posting, so use school appropriate language and ideas.

Sixteen and Dying was by Lurlene McDaniel. It was about a girl named
Annie who was diagnosed HIV positive. It would make your tears flow freely
without you even knowing it. If you ever lost someone or felt the pain of
loosing someone you already know what it feels like. If you didn’t. You can’t
even think you know. It feels as if the world is on you and noone even helps.
But, this book takes you on a journey of hope and makes you feel death isn’t
always bad. But you always have someone to help you through.

  2. Kaylee Mullen Says:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

This is a cool book about a child named Harry Potter, with no parents, who raised by his aunt and uncle, yet he discovers that he has special abilities. He can do MAGIC! He finds out that he really belongs in another world where strange and terrifying things are real. Can you imagine flying on a broom, creating an ice cream sundae out of thin air, causing your enemies to disappear or dishes that clean themselves? Harry learns that everyone in this new world of magic knows more about him and is past than he does. He finds two other students who share his willingness for adventure while at school.
I personally recommend this book for anyone looking for adventure not in the ordinary places.

  3. Stefanie Mullen Says:

    The Outsiders

The book is a metaphor of conflict and harmony. I recomand this to anyone who wants to read about people with serious problems and can’t deal with them easily. There is some violence and emotional parts that might suprize you. The best part about this book to me is the characters and their situations. Read it and you’ll find that it is one of the greatest books there is. If you want to find out what happens to the main character when he kills another person and is in hiding, while he has to deal with other obstacles, then read and find out. Will he survive or die the worst death?

  4. Hanin Says:

  8. Roa Aldhalemi Says:

The type of books I like are by Avi. He wrote many ghost stories that I think are excellent. I have read a few books of his but my favorite one was “Something Upstairs.” I think the library should have his books because they are so interesting and I really enjoyed reading them. Even though they aren’t true stories, you can definetly relate them to something in your life.

  14. SaAdA Says:

    Mrs. Alvarado
I think you should get more books by Margaret Peterson Haddix because I read Turnabout and I thought it was a very interesting and cool book. It was about an old lady named Amelia and she was old and was getting ready to die, then scientist came to her and asked her do you want to become younger and she agreed and she signed a paper. Then the next year the scientist told her that she was getting younger. She was so exited and couldn’t believe it. Also she was told that every year she’d get younger by a year. But what would happen when she become a baby again, who would take care of her.
Also I request you get more books by Scott Westerfeld. I read the book The Uglies it was very interesting. Scott writes books about the future and most of his books are science fiction. I want to read more books like this they are fun to read and they have very well and cliff hanging endings.
I think you should get more books about the future they are so cool they talk about how the world will be in fifty or one hundred years. I think if you get more of these books more kids will read because the reasons why most kids in this school don’t read is because they think that books are real boring and they are uninteresting to read. Those are some books I want you to get for this schools library.
    Thank you

  15. Moona Says:

The book I would pick is R.L. Stine. R.L. Stine is a very thrilling and exiting book. It is a horror book that is not very scary but good. It is challenging and interesting.

It is a good book with nice beginnings and a lot better endings. Another book would be Replica. Especially Amy Number Seven. It is very shocking and thrilling. I love these to book because those are the type I love to read. Also mystery and its both horrors.

So if you could just get a little more R.L. Stine that would be a wish come true. And if you would also not get Goosebumps its only R.L. Stine. It would be a pleasure to read such a great book.

  16. MArwAh FaRHaT #12 Says:

    Dear Mrs. Alverado
The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White is an interesting book to read. Many wondrous kids have already read The Trumpet of the Swan and may already know that it is an inspiring book. You may think that for the first 13 pages it may not be as exciting as you wanted it, but once you reach the point where all the action is, you would not even want to drop your book to eat. It keeps your face glued in the book not wanting to leave.
You can not even imagine the hard work that the amazing author E.B.White had put into The Trumpet of the Swan. It is about a beautiful family of trumpeter swans that discover the real world. Well, it may not have been the whole family but one artistic and creative swan. The protagonist is a deaf toned swan that can only mouth words but nothing comes out. The protagonist travels from place to place learning more and more new things. He learns how to write but since his family and friends do not know how to read there was no use. so the protagonist just kept the slate hanging from his neck.In the beggining the swan starts off with just as a slate. As he progresses and becomes even more famous he recieves more and more gifts. To the end of the story he eds up with a slate board, a piece of chalk, a trumpet, a medal, and a money bag of how much he earned.Using the money ghe earns workiing in the city, he then pays abck the owner of the trumpet store that he stole his trumpet from .
The story of the swan who uses a trummpet to speak to his fellow family and friends is inspiring. He captures the love of his life using amazing music and sounds. Travel through the wonderful adventures with the swan as you read the story of the trumpeter swan.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a wonderful adventure full of suprises and thirlling, exciting, mysterous events.
so… get you wand at the ready, and GOOOOOOOOO!!!
Harry must finally distroy his immortal enemy “he who must not be named” … LORD VOLDOMORT! Once you start reading this book, you will never want to stop! The last book of this series has finally come and students should be able to read this fonomanal book. Mrs. Alvorodo, should get this book for the library because it is a fantastic book to read and it helps your reading skills improve 100%! Even though its a long book, every page is worth reading.

mrs. andersonn iss theee besttt teacher ever!

  19. bilal bazzi Says:

I recommend the book “White Fang” because it is a great novel and it will improve many kids’ vocabulary and their reading skills. I think this book is great for everyone because it is very challenging which will be good. The purpose is to have students enjoy reading depending on their reading level. But usually they should keep challenging themselves so that they will improve. This is the book that I need to convince you to read.
The day I saw this book at the library, I noticed that there was only one. I took it and I asked my teacher for an opinion. It was great, so I took a look and read the back to see the plot of the book. I thought it was great until read it. When I have read it, it was excellent I wanted the whole class to read it. There was only one copy and students had to share. I felt really bad and wanted to do something about it.
A few weeks later Mrs. Anderson lead us to the computer lab and asked us to write a recommendation of a book that we loved the most and the winner would do the thing that we asked for. I really wanted to win so I could prove that this is an excellent book to read.
I wish that everyone could read this book and I know that they will enjoy this book. If you read is carefully, you will notice how smooth it goes with the vocabulary

  20. Susanne Beydoun Says:

I think a good book for the library is the “Pigman”. I checked it out from the public library and I really enjoyed it. It is about teenagers and almost everyone can relate to it. I liked the book so much; I read it in two days. I usually don’t read books that do not interest me. This book really caught my attention. I didn’t want it to end. I think kids my age would really think this book is very marvelous. My sister actually introduced the book to me. She told me she was reading it. Every time she read a chapter she would explain to me what happened. I said to myself that I wanted to read it because it sounded like my kind of book. I checked it out and I adored it. I then started looking in to more books written by Paul Zindal. I did this because this author really understands how the minds of teens work. I really liked that because it shows the reader he understands and everyone goes through tough times.

The Pigman is about two teenagers who do not have a good relationship with their parent’s. It’s about how the two teenagers spend their summer. It’s really awesome. Thy meet this old man and call him the Pigman because he has a lot of glass pigs in his house. The two teenagers spend a lot of time with the Pigman. I think it is a really rich story. I know a lot of people who would really enjoy the genre. The kids in this school will find this book quite accurate. These kinds of issues that the incredible author refers to are what actually happen in ones life at some point.

The reader gets emotional because it gets sad. At some parts it makes you want to cry. I think it is the most wonderful book I ever read. I would really like to read it again. I don’t care if I read it a million times. I will never get bored of it. The author Paul Zindal in my opinion is the finest writer of all times. He really gets how teenagers think and feel. It’s really paramount. I was reading one of his interviews and he said he likes teens. He thinks that teens are very complex. He likes to remind himself of how he was when he was young. Sadly, Paul Zindal is no longer with us. I loved all his books although, my favorite was the Pigman. It topped them all. He would have appreciated his book in our school library for us teens to read.

I would recommend the book “The Lost Boy” its part of a series with the “child called it”.I like how the author writes from his own experience, things hes been through. It makes the book more interesting and more fun to read.
After the first book it leaves you curious of how his life turned out when he grew up.

In “The Lost Boy” the author tells you how his life turned out when he grew up. he had a very hard life, but fortunately it gets better. After many foster homes and hard troubles. I admire the author for coming out and expressing the feelings he had and sharing what happened to him.

the author does a very good job of expressing what he felt. This book was a very good book. it keeps you wanting more.It makes you wonder what happens next.I also feel that the author provides hope for kids that have a hard life like he did.

  22. Batool Eid Says:

The book i would like to recommend is “Lush” By: Natasha Friend. Here’s how the book goes, the girl in Lush is the protagonist who is having trouble in her life. It can relate to a lot of teenagers. It is a book that keeps me reading and thats what I love about it.

Her dad drinks a lot and she has to deal with him coming home every night banging on the walls and starting a fit. In the morning he wakes up and doesnt even remember what happened. Her mom is a yoga-freak she is always going with the calm way, and her younger brother is the only one that can make her smile. Even when she is having a rumor spread around the school about her, he can make her smile. She starts sending letters to someone in the library who makes her problems all go away.

I love this book because it keeps me going. When i read it I feel like i want to keep going and finish the book. It is a great book for teenagers and they can probably relate to the part with drama. The book is very unique it is the only book that i have ever read that made my eyes pop when I read the first chapter.

  23. Samar Hannawi Says:

I recommend the book the Mystery of the Fire Dragon because it is a very interesting book. It caught my attention. It kept me thinking of what will happen next. If students read this book, I think they would enjoy it because it is such a good book. The Mystery of the Fire Dragon is by Nancy Drew. Nancy Drew is a really good author. I think that Nancy Drew has good vocabulary.

When I first started reading this book, I thought it was so good that I couldn’t even put my book down. I was really interested in it. I like mystery books because they are awesome! They are not boring at all. I think many students should start reading it because they would probably like it.

  27. Hosn Dabaja Says:

The book I really really loved is A Child Called It. I loved this book because it was interesting and the author didn’t make the book sound boring. I don’t really like reading books but when I read this it was amazing. This book is based on a true story. Many bad things happened in this book but it still makes it interesting.

This book was about a child whose mother treated him really badly and treated his younger brothers better. The protagonists mother made him eat poop out of his little brothers diaper. This happened because he did not wash the dishes. When the protagonist’s mother puts him in the shower she shuts all the doors and windows and fills the shower with bleach so he can’t breath. The protagonist suffered a really harsh life.

Once you start reading it you will like it and keep reading. I feel that every one should have a chance to read this book. It’s amazing. Many of the books out there have boring beginnings and awesome ends. This book is just the opposite in the beginning it starts out really good. It makes you cry because the harsh conditions the child’s protagonist is going through. :]

    The Rats of NIMH
The book that I recommend for Unis Middle School is ”A Child Called It”, by David Petzler. The reason I recommend this book for you is its heartwarming and it’s true. I really love that book a lot. I read it when I’m bored over and over and I still love it!!! Many bad things happened in the book. You can’t put the book down once you start reading. Trust me!!!!

In the book, Dave the child was treated very badly. His mom made him eat the babies watse (from the behind) just because he didn’t wash the dishes. Also when it was dinner time, he wouldn’t eat until his family finished. He would eat the scraps from the plates that his family was eating. If he was bad his mom would lock him in the basement with the lights closed and not let him come back out till she said so. Even if it was the next day. What’s wrong with her?. Yeah, and the protagonist, which is David suffered a realy harsh life.

I feel that people should read this book because it is very good. Just like chocolate!!! If you actually take yourr time and read it… your first impression is ”WOW”. Just try and you’ll see. I guarantee it!!!!!!!!

    =]

Peter Pan is an amazing story because it has an amazing setting, it takes place in this magical island were Know one could grow up in. Peter and his pixie doll are magical and they are so scarred of going to school thats why its such an amazing book.

  30. Tonya Elkatib Says:

There are many wonderful books out there. The book however, that I recommend is The Giver. The Giver is about a protagonist named Jonas that is given a special task in his community. In the community there are special tasks given to them by the elders in the community when they reach the age of twelve. Only Jonas is selected to do a special task that rarely anyone is assigned to.

The Giver is the type of book that when you start to read you can not seem to stop. When you start to read The Giver it is kind of confusing but it is worth it when you get to the ending. In the book Jonas is an ordinary boy in the story whose life changed completely when he is given the task to be the giver. Only the giver has the special ability to see what others can not. Jonas also has the knowledge to guide others.

Jonas is giving a list of rules he must follow. As Jonas the protagonist of the story learns the secrets of the community he realizes that what they are doing is wrong. If you want to find out what his special ability is and the secret of the community you must read the book. The Giver is one of the greatest books out there. I recommend it to teachers and students everywhere.
