Hello Parents,

REMINDER: NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, MAY 25 and MONDAY, MAY 28 for Memorial Day weekend.

We have had a fun week with “live science” happening in our classroom and on the playground. Our caterpillars did become butterflies in our classroom last week and this week. We also saw mother duck have seven duckings on the preschool playground. It’s been exciting to see the animal life cycle in action.

We opened up the sandbox today. Now the kids will have an added play activity on the playground. The sandbox is a great exploration tool for our students in preschool an K.

We continue our daily routine with exploring letters, colors, numbers, children’s names, labeling objects in the classroom and throughout the school.

We went to the book fair this week and each student got two books of their choice.

Stories this week:

Caps for Sale, Butterfly, Ocean, Swimmy, Bunny My Honey

Have a good weekend.

Science: We are watching our caterpillars grow and become pupas by next week. We can’t wait to see our butterflies. We worked on two book this week to compare and contrast content in these books: The Hungry Caterpillar and Charlie the Caterpillar.

Other reads this week (spring time story books): My Spring Robin, In the Pond, Jump, Frog, Jump, You Job is Easy, My Job is Hard; Hamilton Duck’s Springtime Story; Boy with a Drum

We also talked about pond life, farm life and animals in the forest. We learned about different animals in these different habitats.

CINCO DE MAYO: On Monday, May 7 we are celebrating Cinco de Mayo (the fifth of May). We will learn about where Mexico is, the flag of Mexico and Joshua Gonzalez’s mother will be bringing in authentic Mexican food to share with all of our students. We are so excited about that. We will start our “Fiesta” centers around 1:15 pm and we will enjoy Mexican food around 2:30 pm. You are welcome to join us if you like.

Your child enjoyed lots of recess, exploration time, dress up, puzzles, snack, ABC/number, color and shape/pattern work this week.

Hello Parents,

Secretary’s Week: This week we are saying “thank you” to our secretary, Ms. Julie, for all of her hard work. We fingerpainted flowers today. We will make a poster with the kids tomorrow to give to our secretary, Ms. Julie Wilson.

The preschool/K students had a good week. Now that we have been working with the new teacher for two weeks now, it seems that all of the adults have the routines down. We typically have at least four adults in the room in the mornings. We get to work with centers. The volunteers watch our students in the play area while the teachers and our aide, Ms. Lisa, pull the kids in small group to work on reading/writing readiness tasks. Students have been reading simple books, working on colors, letters, shapes, numbers, cutting, pasting, gluing, painting, finger painting and exploring with writing utensils.

It is working out nicely with the center times as the students get lots of small group attention in different developmental areas.

Community Unit:

We are working on community places and people. We are talking about different parts of a community and what is in a community: schools, houses, parks, stores, restaurants, police station, fire station, library, etc.

Science in the community: We are talking about living things in a community: people, plants and animals. We have live caterpillars that the kids are watching grow. They will become pupas soon and then become butterflies. We have read books this week about butterflies/caterpillars.

We also have a mother duck nesting on the preschool/k playground. The kids enjoy going out there to see the mother duck on her eggs. Hopefully we will be able to see the baby ducks when they are born.

We have discussed that living things need food, water, air and shelter to survive in our community.

Stories this week:

Charlie the Caterpillar

A Butterfly is Born

Butterfly

Daisy and the Egg

Have You Seen my Duckling?

Goldilocks and the Three Bears
