There is no homework tonight, but I would like the surveys I sent home about our Greenfield Village trip returned as soon as possible. It is important because we need to pay well in advance and arrange transportation and chaperones.
I also am in need of drivers and chaperones for our Rouge River water testing field trip. As of right now I have two chaperones which means only half the class would go. Please let me know if you can drive and chaperone for this field trip on April 30.
Each fifth grader was given a form to sign up for middle school elective classes, and I am still waiting for many students to return those.
I am also waiting for O.L. Smith t-shirt order forms to be returned, our very generous PTA buys a shirt for all our graduates.
The 5th grade baby picture contest will be under way soon. Please send in a baby picture of your child for the contest.
Ms. Popovski’s last day is Friday, we will have a celebration in the afternoon. I have asked all students to voluntarily bring in $2 to help toward her gift from the class.

Homework is Study Link 5.4 on equivalent fractions. To find equivalent fractions multiply both the numerator and denominator by the same number or divide both the numerator and denominator by the same number.
The mathematical rational for this is:
3/4 x (3/3) = 9/12 3/4 is equivalent to 9/12 . This is mathematically correct because you have taken the number 3/4 and multiplied it by 1 (3/3 = 1). Any number times 1 always equals the original number. It is the same when dividing by one.

Homework tonight is to complete the Spelling/Grammar pack if it was not completed in school. Students also need to complete Study Links 4.1 and 4.2.
Today we started a new math unit on division. We start with the strategy called partial products. Students divide part of the problem at a time, using nice round numbers, gradually narrowing in on the answer.
Example: 471/3
start by using 100, 3 x 100 = 300
471 - 300 = 171 left still to divide
now try 50, 3 x 50 = 150
171 - 150 = 21 left still to divide
now try 7, 3 x 7 = 21 and there is now nothing left to divide.
The answer is the sum of the partial quotients 100 + 50 + 7 = 157
